My Maternal Side

The starting point of my maternal research is, naturally, my grandparents, George Charles Forbes and Winnie Ida Stevenson.

George Forbes and Winnie Stevenson were married on January 31, 1922 in Shreveport, Louisiana. They had eight children born unto this marriage.

Winnie died on February 2, 1940, just 4 months after the birth of their last child. I can only imagine what must have gone through my grandfather's mind at that time. Eight children, ranging in age from 4 months to 18 years old. Grandpa married again after this to Mary Jane Hayner, who I am told was about 25 years younger than him! I've yet to prove this because I have not been able to find any birth info on Mary Jane.

I've often wondered about why he married a girl so much younger than him not long after the death of Winnie and I just assumed that it was because he had to find someone to help with the children! After further examining the facts, I find that isn't the case. He married again in November of 1943, almost 4 years after the death of Winnie! Of course, times were different then. There was one child born to this union.

George Forbes married one more time, to Willie Mae (Carlow) Herrington on April 16, 1957. They were together until Potsy (Willie's nickname) passed away in February of 1972.

I've also learned that my grandfather was married one other time. Prior to his marriage to my grandmother he was married to an Annie Lee Bayliss. I have found a marriage record and on the marriage record of my grandparents my grandfather has listed that his first wife was dead. The stories I have heard are that his wife and their child both died during childbirth.

I've learned quite a bit about both lines and recently have uncovered some new facts on my Forbes line. To find out more, just select which surname you are interested in and it will take you to the proper page to get started. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your stay!
