First off, to demonstrate that I still have lots to learn, I discovered something I should have already known.I was under the belief that the backup file I found in 2011 was only able to be added to a “new” blog. I did a little experimenting and discovered that I can truly add it to my existing blog.
So, I have added all those posts from 2007, 2008 and from June 2010 until the present to this blog. They haven’t all appeared yet because I am taking the time to check each one to make sure the links are all valid and the images are showing. In some cases I am also adding images to a post to “enhance” it somewhat. I also am taking the time to add tags to each post and make sure it is in the proper category.
WHAT ABOUT 2009?
But what about all those posts I lost for 2009 and early 2010? I had mentioned earlier that they were gone forever and would never be replaced. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. I was messing around the other day and thought about The Wayback Machine, the Internet Archive. Just for curiosity’s sake I typed in the address for my blog. It said that my site had been “hit” 39 times in the 6 years of its existence. It breaks it down by dates so I chose to view what it showed for 2009. I was surprised at what I found.
I found 20 posts listed there. Their dates ranged from April 1, 2009 to June 26, 2009. Almost 3 months of posts recovered. I also found some other posts but they were incomplete. It was more of a snapshot of pages with a snippet and then the “More” tag. I don’t know if this is from me using the “More” tag or if it is something that The Wayback Machine added. I’m assuming it was me using the tag. This, in itself, gives me pause as to whether I want to continue to use the “More” tag on my posts.
WHAT DID THESE POSTS COVER?
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to recover the post(s) about the birth of my first grandchild and how it felt to be a grandpa. I did recover quite a few posts about the decision process to move to North Carolina and about my initial impressions of the move once we had made it. All in all, some pretty good stuff.
So, look for some of these posts to start appearing soon. I’ll probably post a little reminder as I finish off a year or something like that. I’m still not sure. The great thing about it is that all those posts will be back where they belong, on the proper domain and that means that anyone who linked to them, say “The Carnival of Genealogy“, will no longer have dead links there! Yay!!!!!!
This also means that the “satellite” site I had started to show my old blog posts can now come down and I don’t have to worry about having my info outside of my domain name!
Never say never! I’m keeping the faith that continued searching may end up helping me to recover more!
Have a great day everyone,
