I’ve been giving this some thought lately and decided I wanted to post this for all my readers to know my feelings. I want to address the reasons I don’t participate in all the “activities” for the geneabloggers or genealogy community in general.
First off, the biggest reason for this is my work schedule! I work second shift, 3:30 to midnight, Eastern Time Zone. This schedule automatically negates me from participating in many of these activities. The few I might be able to attend usually require some sort of sacrifice, such as attending a 2 PM webinar and I have to leave for work at 3. It means I have to be dressed and ready by 2, view the webinar and then rush to get to work. I’m not really the kind that likes to do this!
What about the weekends, why can’t I attend then? Well, with my wife working day shift and my children in school I rarely get a chance to see them. That is what my weekends are for. If, by chance, there are no plans and everyone is having a lazy day then I may try to jump in on some events but for the most part I try to spend that time with my family.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to attend many of these events. The Geneablogger’s Radio on Friday nights, the Second Life meetings, some of the webinars would be great to go to. I just have to make the choice of how I spend my time.
So, please don’t think I don’t want to be active in the “community”. I do! Unfortunately, with my schedule, I have to make choices and these activities are usually the ones that get the axe.
Who knows what tomorrow brings. I may find myself on day shift again and be able to participate more.
Now, you know the rest of the story!
