Doing genealogy and family history is a hobby of mine. To be precise, it is basically my only hobby! Everything else I do (website, blogging, photography) is like a sub-hobby, if there is such a thing!
I don’t make money at this but I do spend quite a bit! Of course, like everyone says, my time is money also.
So, that brings me to my point of this post. Do you remember the children’s story “The Little Red Hen“? You know, the busy little hen that couldn’t get any help from the other barnyard animals. When she finally got her bread made they were all ready to eat and enjoy it! The little red hen fixed ‘em by keeping it all to herself!
That’s how I feel sometimes. For 11 years I’ve researched my family history. I’ve had lots of help from some very nice people and I have tried to reciprocate when possible. I love doing this! But …! There’s always that but!
There are always some who don’t contribute but always want the end product.
How do you react when you post information about downloading a 56 page pension file and the only responses you get are “when are you going to send me copies?” OK, maybe I am overreacting. Some have been very kind and shared my excitement. There are always the few who lurk in the shadows and only come forward when there is something to be had!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind sharing. Heck, what do you think my blog and web site are about! My only complaint is that I should have time to be able to read and digest what I have found before everyone hits me with requests for copies of it!
Maybe in the future I should hold off on my excitement and make sure I have had time to examine everything before posting about it.
What do you think about this? Have you had similar situations and, if so, how did you handle it?
Leave me a comment or send me a message. Heck, you can even post a follow-up on your blog.
Thanks for letting me vent!
