I was working on a “Sources” page for my Dad today and I remembered the confusion that happened shortly after my father’s death in 2000.
We were giving information for the death certificate and told the lady that my Dad’s full name was David Ira Spangler. My cousin, Dorothy Landers Fisher, just happened to be standing by at the time and quickly said that this was not true. His middle name was Isaic!
Well, naturally, we told her that it was my Dad and we should know what his middle name is! However, upon further examination, we really didn’t know!
We finally agreed that the name on the death certificate should read “David Isaac Spangler”. To this day, I’m really not sure what my Dad’s real middle name is.
Here are a couple of things to consider. There really isn’t a “set” name for my Dad on his birth certificate. Look at the name section of that certificate:
No one could decide what they wanted to name him, apparently. I am assuming that my grandmother chose to name him David Spangler, Jr. but my grandfather wanted to name him Isaic, after his father. So, did they spell it “Isaic” or “Isaac”? It looks like there are two different instances of it there.
There are two other documents that I have that contain the name “David Ira Spangler”. As far as I know, these are official documents and were signed for by my Dad so I know no reason why he would lie on them!
Here is his last Driver’s License:
and here is his Social Security Card:
So, what is his real name? Well, here is one story I heard before.
According to some, my Dad got this name Ira when he used to work on construction sites. He worked with a lot of “African American” individuals and when they called him David I they would always say it David Ira. I’ve heard it done before. Some “African American” folks do slur certain words. R is r-ra so why is i becoming i-ra so hard to comprehend?
Please pardon how I phrased the above text. I wrote it the best way I could figure. I mean no disrespect and I am not racist. I am just pointing out how Dad came to be called Ira, that is all!
Why Dad started to adopt that spelling of his name I will never know. Maybe he liked it, maybe he just got used to it and thought why not!
We will never know for sure about this one! His name on the death certificate will remain David Isaac but I still wonder, what was my Dad’s real middle name?
Have you ever ran across something like this before?
