I’ve been whining quite a bit lately about how I lost everything last summer and didn’t have it backed up! I’m sure you are all pretty tired of hearing it! Well, how about something different?
In the ultimate case of irony, I have found some backups on my old computer. No, it’s not backups of my site or my blog. It’s backups of sites that my sister and my cousin had on GeoCities.
I’m not sure how many folks hosted sites on GeoCities but I know there were quite a few. I had a couple of sites on there back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, even hosting my genealogy on there originally. I grew tired of the ads and such and moved away from GeoCities in 2005, getting my own domain name.
Anyways, I digress. These three sites were pretty cool sites. Two were designed by my sister, Kim. One was a memorial to my Dad, who passed away in April 2000. It was called “My Hero: David I. Spangler”. The other was a memorial for my cousin, Brenda Kay (Landers) Dibble. It was called “In Remembrance of Brenda Kay Landers Dibble”. Kim put a lot of work into these sites. When I contacted her yesterday and asked if I could “host” them on my domain, she was excited to finally have them back.
The third site is a site created by my cousin, Dorothy (Landers) Fisher. It was called “The Wonderful World of Dorothy’s Family” and had all her genealogy research on her Spangler/Landers roots. I’ve contacted her about also extending the same favor and I am awaiting her response.
It is so interesting how quickly I was able to “restore” these sites to my domain. Very little editing and “Voila!” they are up and running! What if I had done the same courtesy for myself by backing up my site.
So, you now have both sides of the picture. The frustration of losing everything and the joy of finding a complete backup and the relief of how easy it is to get going again when you have a good backup!
I’ve experienced both sides of this issue. I must say I would prefer coming out on the happy side. I’m slowly restoring my site and as I do, I am backing it up as I go! The good thing is that I am keeping it all in my Dropbox folder so it will automatically be backed up each day and can be accessed no matter where I am at.
So, I will put this subject to rest for now. I just wanted to take the time to let you all know how frustrating it is to lose everything and know that there was really no excuse for it. I had been told and I just took the approach that it wasn’t going to happen to me.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!
Here’s wishing you all a great Sunday. Enjoy your day and enjoy these nice temps. Come on Spring!
