I wanted to take a moment to talk to you all about backing up your content.
You would think that I would have learned after suffering through losing all my posts last summer but apparently I still haven’t learned!
Today, I was toying around with a plugin for my blog that would allow me to backup my blog database. My heart was in the right place but it seems that the plugin wasn’t! After a few fruitless tries I finally gave up. The plugin didn’t!
Whatever happened, I ended up with my blog going down for a good 12 hours. It took a call to my host to get everything straightened out and, fortunately, my blog was OK!
Now, I can safely say that I have learned my lesson. I took the time to learn how my host lets me download a copy of my database in a.sql file and also how WordPress will allow me to export my blog (without all the pictures and such) in a .xml file. Both backups are now in my Dropbox folder.
I think I will do this quite often. It doesn’t take long to do and for the most part it would be something that could be done while I am sleeping.
All I know for sure is that it was a scary feeling thinking that I might lose everything again today. I won’t let that happen again.
Please take the time to familiarize yourself with your blogging software or platform and learn the art of backing up your work! You will be happy you did so if anything ever does go wrong.
I speak from experience!
Have a great day!
