March 2 — Post a photo of one of your female ancestors. Who is in the photo? When was it taken? Why did you select this photo?
This is my 2nd-great-grandmother, Charlotte (Buss) Beal. I know very little about her. I found the little information I have via a section of a book called The History of Vernon County, Wisconsin”. In this book it tells that she came over from England in 1841 and she settled in Waterville, Oneida Co., New York. She married Charles Beal in November 1846 in Oneida Co., New York.
She came with her husband, Charles, to Wisconsin in 1851. They settled first in Dodge County, then Sauk County, and finally in Vernon County in 1859. They had a farm with 80 acres of land located in Hillsborough.
I’m not sure when this picture was taken. I know from a tombstone picture that Charlotte died May 11, 1906 but I would probably assume this was taken some time in the 1880s or so. I also have her listed as being born January 20, 1824 but I, regretfully, don’t know where I got that information from! (Shame on me!)
I hope to someday learn a little more about her but for now I am thankful to have this picture of her. It was provided by my cousin, Sylvia Maxine Cantrell.
One other reason I really enjoy this photo is because I am always fascinated when you can look this far back and yet still see the resemblance to someone who is living today! Strangely, it’s not a female who I am considering here, it’s my brother. I can’t find the picture I used before but she looks so much like my brother and they both have a “mole” in the same spot, just between the nose and lip on their left side.
Happy hunting everyone!
