I’m sorry if this post disappoints you but for me it is something that is so exciting!
I wrote a post last week about finding a file on my hard drive that appeared to be some sort of backup text file. The post can be found here. I thought for sure that I was going to have to sort through this bunch of jibberish and try to figure out what to keep and what not to keep. Then I started reading at the top of it. Here is what it looked like:
<!– This is a WordPress eXtended RSS file generated by WordPress as an export of your blog. –><!– It contains information about your blog’s posts, comments, and categories. –><!– You may use this file to transfer that content from one site to another. –><!– This file is not intended to serve as a complete backup of your blog. –><!– To import this information into a WordPress blog follow these steps. –><!– 1. Log into that blog as an administrator. –><!– 2. Go to Manage: Import in the blog’s admin panels. –><!– 3. Choose “WordPress” from the list. –><!– 4. Upload this file using the form provided on that page. –><!– 5. You will first be asked to map the authors in this export file to users –><!– on the blog. For each author, you may choose to map to an –><!– existing user on the blog or to create a new user –><!– 6. WordPress will then import each of the posts, comments, and categories –><!– contained in this file into your blog –><!– generator=”WordPress/2.5.1″ created=”2008-12-30 18:01″ –>
So, I tried it and “Voila!” it imported everything. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is still some work to do. It has all the posts recovered from the first post of my blog up to Dec. 30, 2008 but it doesn’t have all the pictures and such! I still have a lot of work ahead of me!
It also imported my pages, which means I now have a Blog Roll page and a Genealogy Toolbox page. I can’t guarantee any of these links right now as I haven’t gone through them all.
So, for the time being I ask you to be patient with me while I get things in order! I’m just excited that I have been able to recover the first year and a half of my blog. Now I am only missing the entire year of 2009 and the first 5 months of 2010. Who knows, I may have another backup somewhere around here!
One other thing, I believe that it copied everything exactly as it should be so any posts I submitted before to Carnivals or whatever may work again. This is a good thing if someone is reading an old Carnival of Genealogy and clicks on the link for my site. It should bring them here as if nothing ever happened. At least, that is what I am hoping for!
Have a great week everyone!
