As part of my changes for the New Year I would like to revive my “Monday Musings” posts. It allows me to post about whatever might be on my mind at the time!
Today, I would like to discuss my progress on my goals for 2011. Yes, I know it has only been one day since I posted but I did do quite a bit of work today!
My first project I have attempted to tackle is my pictures on my PC. Today I moved all the picture files I could find on all my partitions on to one partition. Fortunately I chose the one that had 50GB to it. I know there are quite a few doubles and triples and perhaps even worse because I had to make my PC sort them out that way as I moved them. None of them are in folders anymore. I moved every picture I found onto that one drive and they are all standing alone. It took quite a while and I plan on going back through my drives again in the next few days to make sure I got them all. I was shocked at my totals so far. The drive I have them on shows 25,731 files totaling right at 31GB! Wow!!!!
My next plan, after scanning back through my drives, is to try to figure out the best naming scheme to use. I’m thinking about just using a scheme such as kws00001.jpg, kws00002.jpg, etc…. for pics that are of my immediate family (kws is me, Kenneth Wayne Spangler). That is the ones I will probably have more of. When it comes to the ones that are of my cousins, grandparents, uncles, etc… I plan on using something such as For00001.jpg, etc…, where For stands for Forbes. I could use Spa for Spangler, Gam for Gamble and Ste for Stevenson. This would allow me to have the files that are related to Forbes go up to 99999, which should be enough.
I know it sounds kind of strange but I need to figure out a way to keep them sorted for each family group so that they are still in an 8/3 format. That means 8 spaces for the name and 3 spaces for the extension. This will allow it to be compatible for most everything. I plan on making an Excel file or Word file with a table to keep up with the different names I use and that will allow me to be able to know what I am thinking. I will keep it in the same file as the pictures so that anyone who needs it will be able to find it easily enough.
Of course, this is all preliminary. I’m kind of figuring this all out as I go. I’ve read up on it in the past and I do remember reading that this sort of naming convention was accepted as the best. If I find a problem, I may have to make adjustments but for now I think I am heading in the right direction.
I also plan on finding some sort of program to help me input some sort of metadata with the pictures. This will allow me to be able to put in information pertaining to that picture, such as location, date, what the event was, and so on. I’m not sure which program is the best or if there is some sort of way of doing it without another program and just using something within Windows itself.
I have a lot of work to do and a lot of learning to do. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I will gladly listen!
That’s it for today! I hope you all have a wonderful week.
