Dad Loved Dirt Track Racing, Part IV

Well, I haven’t forgotten about this series I’ve just been busy with other things! So, here is 4th and final part of the series.

So, last time I told you about my brother Charles and how my dad gave up building cars for a while to support his son. Well, you know the story all too well, it wasn’t long until the father and son bond began to break! No, they still cared for each other. It was just too much for the two of them to handle. So, before I go on with my dad’s next venture into building cars let me show you one last clipping I found on my brother. It shows how good he was, in my opinion.

OK, back to my Dad. Once again he decided to start building cars and he chose a man named Curtis Cannaday as his driver. Once again I had to sit by and watch as he would cut up some classic ’68 Camaro for the body. (I hated that part!) The initial car wasn’t much to look at. I’m not sure if it came in the middle of the season or what but it was nothing like any of his previous cars. Still, it was a pretty decent little car.

His second car was better. It had a nicer paint job, a sponsor and it ran pretty decent. This is the one I got to drive for a few weeks before deciding it wasn’t for me. Curtis did a good job with it. I really can’t remember much more about it than that. I think that I just wanted to forget about it because of the tensions it caused between my dad and I.

The third and final car I have to show you is one of my Dad’s finest. I really loved the red, white and blue colors. The car was awesome to look at but, once again, I can’t remember how well it did because I had lost interest and didn’t go to the track anymore. This was the last time I remember Dad being involved with dirt track racing. I think that when he moved back to Paris, Texas and decided to retire he was ready to get out of the racing business also.

His next little hobby will be my next series. It won’t be as long or colorful but it will be interesting for me.
