Today, I had one of those moments. You know, your excited to be doing something but you realize that this will be the last time you do it!
I renewed the domain registration and hosting account for my Forbes – Stevenson Genealogy Home Page. I haven’t really done a lot on it lately. As a matter of fact, I’ve pretty much abandoned it! The only reason I renewed it was to make sure everyone in my family and all my contacts have enough warning before I close it down.
Why would I do that? Well, I think I blogged about it before but, the reality is that I chose a bad domain name! It’s that simple. I wanted to incorporate my paternal research into the site but how can you put all your Spangler & Gamble information on a site that has a domain called forbes-stevenson.com? My solution was to grab the domain name of kenspangler.com, thus enabling me to be able to do whatever I want. I can use this domain for my genealogy (both sides) and for my family site and for my other hobbies. I wish I would have thought about that sooner because I have poured 3 years into the other site and it was just starting to take off when I decided to make the change.
Perhaps I am wrong in doing this but I can’t afford to pay hosting and registration for 2 web sites now. I guess I am just too cheap!
So, with today’s renewal I have only one other act to perform on my old site. I will soon put an auto-redirect on the front page and effectively put the last nail in the coffin of my site. I will continue to work hard and promote my new site but it is like saying goodbye to a very close friend. Am I strange that I have become so close to a web site? It’s just cyberspace, right?
Anyways, I just wanted to share that with you all. Thanks for putting up with my rantings today.
