OK, I know everyone has heard this a million times but I want to re-emphasize this to you all. Please take the time to document your research AS you are doing it! I am far from being an expert at the subject but I just wanted to share my dilemma with you all and perhaps you can learn from my mistakes.
I have researched my paternal AND maternal history for the past 7 and 1/2 years. In that time I have accumulated many documents, some hard copy and some just images from places such as Ancestry or Footnote. During this time I have struggled with making sure I documented everything and I always pledge to get my facts documented. Well, tonight I am sitting here staring at a folder with over 3000 images of documents and family group sheets and such. 3000!!!! That’s a lot of stuff to go through!
How wonderful it would have been if I had taken the time to document everything up front! Yes, I didn’t have all the documents at first but if I would have added the documentation as soon as I got it, things would be so much easier. Now, instead of doing research and proving what an internet friend has given me I find myself spending many man-hours going through and documenting 7 and 1/2 years of research!
Take it from me, you need to document your research as you are doing it!!!!
Well, it’s back to the big mess I have. Even those who have researched for years still have so much to learn about how to do genealogy!
