I have a major dilemma going on. I have been gathering lots of information from Ancestry.com and have been able to increase the findings in my research substantially. I now find myself with a dilemma of how to merge my GedCom files!
I don’t really know if there is a standard to how you are supposed to do your recording of data but I have always used Family Tree Maker and had a separate file for each portion of the family, i.e. Paternal Grandfather, Paternal Grandmother, Maternal Grandfather and Maternal Grandmother. I also usually will keep a database with all the combined lines. My dilemma is that I have entered all the information into my separate databases and now need to merge them. However, some of the old databases contain information that conflicts with the new information I have found and I end up with double individuals and such.
I guess the simplest way to have done this would have been to have entered the data in my large database and then just did a separate file later. I didn’t think this through when I was doing all the other data collection and entering.
Would anyone know of a great program for merging GedCom files? Is there a better way of keeping information? I really would like to hear from folks about how you do your databases!
